We Are All Animals

One of my all-time favorite quotes comes from the late Dr. George Sheehan:

“There are as many reasons for running as there are days in the year, years in my life. But mostly I run because I am an animal and a child, an artist and a saint.

So, too, are you. Find your own play, your own self-renewing compulsion, and you will become the person you are meant to be.”

Becoming a Better Animal

Once we are aware that we are all individual sapiens in the kingdom Animalia, it becomes easier to visualize that we are also hardwired to survive, thrive, and prepare the next generation to be better suited for the environment we live in.

In the health and fitness area of our individual evolution, we are at our core, aiming to become better animals.

Growl. Sweat. Evolve.

To accomplish this growth, there are three main steps that we cycle through:

  • Growl: The ambition to set goals and make the strategic choices for how we as unique individuals will achieve them.
  • Sweat: Stress and recover, i.e. “do the work,” which means not just training but all the work including nutrition, sleep, self care, and overall life management.
  • Evolve: Moving to an improved future state after doing the work and reviewing our execution in order to adapt the future plan.

How well are you evolving? Do you need to sweat a bit more? Do you need to spend a few hours growling to decide your plan? Do you need to reflect and possibly adjust your current trajectory?
